National Society of Leadership and Success Boosts Student Achievement

As a client adviser and math tutor at KD College Prep in Dallas, Miranda Rader helps students improve their test scores and manage coursework. A graduate of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Miranda Rader became a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), which enhances university students’ academic and people skills.

Serving more than 1.6 million members at over 750 institutions, NSLS is the brainchild of Gary Tuerack, who expanded his motivational speaking into a nationwide program of support and leadership development. NSLS’ mission relies on lifelong skill-building, personal development, and collective encouragement. Following are three of its success stories:

Derek

A student at Dean College in Massachusetts, Derek Izzo is earning a bachelor’s degree in business management. Participation in NSLS enabled him to focus on academics and make an impact outside the classroom. He credits NSLS with his success as a baseball coach at his high school.

Jennifer

Motivated at first only by the cachet of having NSLS on her resume, Jennifer Dinell came to value the organization’s ability to inspire excellence. She has joined five other student groups and become her NSLS chapter’s vice president of operations while maintaining a 3.88 GPA at Purdue University Calumet.

Tristan

A student at Clark Atlanta University, Tristan Thompson appreciates NSLS’ impact on his life and career planning. After unsuccessfully trying to find a home in various student clubs, Tristan was inducted into NSLS in his sophomore year. The experience has increased his communications skills and helped him support other students’ leadership qualities.

Safety Tips for Biking

A former barista shift leader at La La Land Kind Cafe, Miranda Rader now works as a client advisor at KD College Prep. In this position, she organizes parent-student conferences and helps students sign up for classes, and manages their schedules. Miranda Rader enjoys hiking and biking during her free time.

Biking is an easy leisure and sporting activity; it is also an affordable form of transportation. It has a relatively small amount of risk factors; however, safety precautions are needed. Wearing helmets is essential every time you ride a bike. By doing this, the risk of fatal head injuries reduces significantly should an accident occur.

Secondly, the risk of an accident is more likely if a driver cannot see you, especially around intersections. You can avoid collisions with other road users by increasing your visibility by wearing bright and reflective colors or adding reflectors to your bike.

If a car in front of you is driving slower than you, stay on the left side. If you use the right side, the vehicle driver may not notice you and crash into you, especially if they turn right or change lanes.

Finally, biking at night is significantly riskier than riding during the day because of low lighting, which reduces the chances of other drivers seeing you. If it is essential, ensure that your bicycle has reflectors on the front and back and reflectors on your tires before heading out.
